Every person is unique, with their own personality, strengths, communication style, sensory needs, preferences and boundaries. A supportive wellness experience should honour the whole person and allow them to participate in the way that feels most comfortable.
At Cedar Cove Wellness, gentle and adaptable Reiki sessions welcome neurodivergent children and adults, people with Down syndrome, and people with other exceptionalities or disabilities. Each session is tailored to the individual with patience, kindness and respect.
What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle, complementary wellness practice that may offer a calm and supportive experience. During a session, the practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the body, according to the person’s comfort and preferences.
There is no expectation that someone must lie still on a treatment table, close their eyes or remain quiet. Reiki can be adapted to different communication styles, sensory needs and ways of moving.
A Reiki Session Shaped Around the Individual
During a Reiki session, children and adults may choose to:
Sit in a chair or lie on a couch or treatment table
Stand, move around or change positions
Talk, colour, draw or play quietly
Listen to music or enjoy a familiar activity
Hold a favourite comfort item
Take breaks whenever needed
Have a parent, caregiver or support person nearby
Reiki may be offered using gentle touch when the person is comfortable and agrees. If touch is not preferred, the practitioner’s hands may be held just above or near the body. Comfort, boundaries and personal preferences are respected throughout the session.
There Is No “Right” Way to Receive Reiki
Everyone experiences Reiki differently. Some people become deeply relaxed, while others prefer to talk, move or remain involved in a familiar activity. Each response is valid.
The session is shaped around what helps the individual feel safe, comfortable and supported. A person may change positions, ask for a break or decide that they no longer want to be touched at any point during the experience.
How Reiki May Support Well-Being
A Reiki session may offer an opportunity for:
Relaxation and peaceful time
Comfort and emotional support
Easing feelings of stress or overwhelm
Supporting a sense of calm and emotional balance
Developing greater body awareness
Supporting an overall sense of well-being
Each person responds in their own way, and no particular outcome can be guaranteed.
Working Together with Parents, Caregivers and Support People
Parents, caregivers and support people are welcome to share information that may help create a positive experience. This may include the person’s communication preferences, sensory sensitivities, favourite activities, comfort items, signs of discomfort and preferred ways of being supported.
A parent, caregiver or support person may remain nearby during the session when this helps the individual feel more comfortable. The person receiving Reiki is included in choices and decisions as fully as possible, and their verbal and non-verbal communication is respected throughout the experience.
Bringing a Favourite Comfort Item
A favourite stuffed animal, blanket, crystal or other meaningful object may be brought to the session. Familiar items can help create a sense of comfort and security in a new environment.
With permission, Reiki may also be offered to the item so it can become a comforting reminder of the experience afterward.
Learning Reiki to Offer Support at Home
Parents and caregivers may choose to take a Reiki course to learn how to offer gentle Reiki support to their child or adult family member at home. Learning Reiki can provide another quiet and adaptable way to share comforting, focused time together while continuing to respect the person’s boundaries and preferences.
A Welcoming and Adaptable Experience
At Cedar Cove Wellness, Reiki sessions are not based on expecting a person to behave or communicate in a particular way. The goal is to provide a welcoming environment where children and adults can be themselves and receive Reiki in a way that honours their individuality.
Reiki is a complementary wellness practice and is not a replacement for medical care, therapy or other professional support.
